Men Mentoring Men

Mentoring men is a process in which the man being mentored absorbs masculinity from the one who is the mentor. It is similar to the young boy absorbing his father's masculinity down to the imitation even of his habits and behaviors. True masculinity is caught more than it is taught and the mentoring process involves a mentor walking with the one being mentored on a journey toward maturity.

In mentoring, we are affirming our belief in the incarnational truth that God really indwells the person we are mentoring as well as our selves. We believe that this indwelling God will transform us both from within. The mentor's role is to create an atmosphere in which the reality of the incarnation can be experienced by the one he is mentoring.

Training to be a mentor is not learning a system for understanding the person being mentored, but rather learning to trust God to work through you and guide your understanding about what He wants to accomplish in the person's life. God will draw from all that He has taught you and from all of your life experiences. The more of life you have experienced and the more you have learned, the greater is the reservoir inside of you that god can draw from.

In this seminar MEN MENTORING MEN you will be taught some basic material that has been developed in forty years of counseling/mentoring men. The intent is to enlarge your reservoir, to provide you with information about the issues that men face in our culture so that you will have a better understanding of the problems that the men you are mentoring face every day. This information is presented in a small group experience so that you experience how other men react to and incorporate the material into their lives.

The slogan for the small group experience is: "SCREW NICE1 BE REAL!" If we want the men we are mentoring to be real with us than we need to learn to be real with other men first, so we can model being real with the men we are mentoring.

Mentoring and discipleship in most Christian groups involved passing on a body of information, theological and procedural, to the people being mentored. Conceptual, objective knowledge about Jesus and the Christian life has almost entirely replaced attempts to walk with God, to experience supernatural power in daily living. We have mentored people to be "human doings" instead of human beings. We memorize Scripture and learn theological truth, but we don't experience spiritual reality in the context of a loving relationship with God and with one another.

If this is what you expect MEN MENTORING MEN to be, you will be disappointed. Mentoring incorporates a relationship that is authentic and real. Most men in our culture have not been emotionally connected with anyone, particularly their fathers and in MEN MENTORING MEN we work in and from a strong relational emphasis. We believe that authentic relationships and intimacy make the soil in which the human personality can develop healthy roots and grow to emotional and spiritual maturity.

As you embark on this journey, which is MEN MENTORING MEN, it is our prayer that you will experience more of the reality of the indwelling Christ and the power that He provides for you. We pray that the love of God and His wisdom and power will flow through you into the lives of the men He brings into your life to mentor.

Men grow and change in gender specific groups! Healthy masculinity is caught more than it's taught and the best way to catch healthy masculinity and spirituality is to hang out with guys who are growing and finding healing.

The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God, spoken and written, and the people of God, brothers and sisters in Christ, to enable individuals to grow and find emotional and relational healing.

Life 2.0 - Life that is truly life

There is a significant reason that people do not find emotional and relational healing. What I have obsesrved over years and years of counseling couples and individuals is that there is a major reason most people do not find emotional healing.

But first let me point out a piece of evidence that a person has not experienced emotional healing in an area: the fact that he/she keeps doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. The same arguments have taken place for years over the same topics, perhaps difference characters, but same issues. They keep blaming the other person. They keep focusing on what they don't have instead of what they do have. They keep blowing up at the same issues they have been blowing up about for years. And they are unaware of the pain they cause. An instand replay would reveal that even the same words and gestures have been used for years.

The main reason most people don't find emotional healing is that they Don't honestly believe that they need it as bad as their partner does. When you or anyone is humbled before God, broken by His revelation, crumpled by His sorrow, then healing is just a step away. Ask God to search you out and show you what He wants to heal in you (Psalm 139:23-24). You will be shocked at how amazingly fast your partner changes when God touches you first.

Perhaps there is a reason you get to frustrated. Could it be that God is trying to change, heal you and He wants you to focus on yourself instead of your partner?

My Purpose and Committment

My purpose in every area of my life is to let Jesus shine through me. I want to be a re-incarnation of His nature so that people see Jesus through me. I desire that he accomplish His purposes in the audiences I speak to; in the lives of those I counsel or coach and in the lives of everyone I meet.

When I speak, I desire to have Christ present His truth through me and for the people to be drawn to Jesus by my words and my actions. I don't want to be a hindrance but catalyst for everyone I minister to and for everyone in the audiences I speak to.

I desire to be a flesh and blood re-presentation of Jesus to each person I counsel and coach. I want each individual or couple to see Jesus, not me; to feel His love not mine; to hear His truth not mine. I want everyone I counsel to become christ dependent not Waylon dependent. I want everyone to be drawn to Jesus not to Waylon except as I am a mirror to show them Jesus.

I want to be a growth facilitator in my speaking, counseling and coaching. I want to help every person become more like Christ (Colossians 1:28)...to be what God created them to be. I do not believe they can do that without a personal deep intimacy with Jesus. I want to be an instrument that God uses to set people free, to teach people truth, to assist them in removing every hindrance to their personal growth. I particularly desire to help people see an accurate picture of God so that their God-image will be accurate.

I want to honor and worship the Father with every ounce of my being. I want to be a vessel, created by the Father, filled by His Spirit and overflowing for His glory. I want to experience all I can of the Spirit but I never want people to see me and my great experiences. I want all eyes to be on the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

So here is my prayer of commitment:

O Lord my God, my Savior, my Friend:

I am Yours. Your are mine.

I commit the rest of my life into your hands.

I surrender all that I am to You for Your purposes.

I desire to be used by You to touch people's lives,

to be Your instrument of healing and comfort.

I want You to glorify Yourself whenever I speak or counsel or coach.

Her is my mind, O Lord.

Think Your thoughts in me.

Be my wisdom, truth, knowledge and insight.

I commit myself to the Bible as Your Holy Word and accurate in every way for my life and what I teach.

Help me to filter all my words and actions through Your Word that I might accurately re-present you every time I speak.

Here is my voice.

You have said in Your Word not to worry about what I am to say, but that Your Spirit in me will give me what to say and how to say it.

Free me to speak with silence or words, which ever is needed at that moment.

Give me Your timing and tenderness and understanding.

Help me to write the words that You want written and that You put into my head and heart.

Guide my studies Lord.

Lead me to the material that You want me to learn.

Now O Lord, here is my body to be a temple for Your presence, a Holy of Holies for You.

Manifest Yourself in me as You did in the Tabernacle and Temple of old.

Release creative and healing affection in my face, my touch, and my embrace.

Use me as Your hands and arms in the lives of those You bring into my life.

And Jesus, if there is something I am to do by Your indwelling presence, however menial or tough, I ask that You control my will to do it.

I want to do what You did and to only do what You do in me.

Lord, I am ready now to be your manifest intervention in situations that you place me in:

to infuse joy, affirm growth or absorb pain and aching anguist.

I choose to live this day and the rest of my life in the reality of Your presence in me.

I give You praise and thanks for answering this prayer and for making me Your instrument.

I am Your vessel to be filled up with You.

Use me to bring healing and growth to Your people and free me from my selfish desires that hinder the flow of Your Spirit in me.

Enable me to accept my humanity as the divinely created contained that You will fill with Your Spirit and the instrument that You use to touch other human lives.

Protect me from the evil one and his deceptive lies.

I am Yours and You are mine.

In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen

There is a major difference between New Testament Christianity and Christianity as it is lived by the average person in the average church in America today. To modern day Christians, the Christian life is primarily a creed to be lived through effort and daily performance. To the New Testament Christian, it was an experience of reality something just as real as the air they breathed.

Contemporary Christians are likely to reduce the Christian faith to a moral code or a pattern for life. It is an external reality that is to be applied to their life by personal choice and effort. To the people in the New Testament churches It was plainly the invasion of their lives by a new quality of life. They do not hesitate to describe this as Christ living in them. (J.B. Phillips, Letters to Young Churches)

J.B. Phillips continued, Mere moral reformation will hardly explain the transformation and the exuberant vitality of these men's lives--even if we could prove a motive for such reformation, and certainly the world around offered little encouragement to the early Christians. We are practically driven to accept their own explanation, which is that their little human lives had through Christ, been linked up with the very Life of God.

The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit making the Divine nature of Jesus Christ present and real in our daily experience is the power that makes our Christian experience unique. Paul wrote, "Christ in you, the hope of glory." This is real Christianity.

Which side of the Cross are you living on?

Bill Johnson reminds us that "Christianity is life on the resurrection side of the Cross." Christianity is not intended to be about sin management; it is meant to be about manifesting the life of the son of God in our flesh. You and I are constructing a soul that will live with us for eternity and the model for that construction is Jesus Christ Himself. We are to become like our King...not act like Jesus, but become like Jesus. Our internal reality will become our extreme reality. We are partakers of the "Divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4) and we are being transformed into the likeness of Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18). How is your building project coming along? I know Jesus is going to be excited to see what you present to Him.

Mentoring/Coaching for Discipleship

The process that every Christian is to participate in is discipleship. God calls all 'born again' people to be discipled. The process is about emotional and spiritual growth so that the believer reproduces the character and qualities of life that are seen in the life of Christ. Believers are all to become like Christ and manifest the fruit of the Spirit in their normal Christian experience.

Discipleship is the process described in the New Testament and is to be the norm for all Christians. Christians are to become like Christ, not just act like Christ. The end produce is human beings who have been transformed by God's Spirit through their intentional submission to God's activities and through that process have become like Christ, participating in the "Divine nature" (II Peter 1:4).

The New Testament states that "another" lives in us (Galations 2:20); our bodies are the temple of the Spirit of God (I Corinthians 6:19-20). Every believer is indwelt by Christ (Romans 8:9-11) so that each believer is an incarnation of Jesus in this world. As a person lives in the reality of this indwelling Holy Spirit, the process of transformational healing reproduces the character and attributes of Christ in us.

Two contemporary words have been adopted which describe for most men, the discipleship process: mentoring and coaching. The process and the goal are the same as the New Testament word "discipleship" but are free from some of the negative tones and implications of that word as most men have heard it used.

Incarnational Reality

"And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing gloory which comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." II Corinthians 3:18

The process of transformational healing is the journey of moving toward full incarnation, the process of being conformed in the image of Christ. The Scriptures tell us that this is the goal of our growth.

Galations 4:19 - "My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you."

Colossians 1:28 - "We proclaim Him, counseling and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ."

Ephesians 4:11-13 - "Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining the full measure of perfection found in Christ."

Colossians 2:9 - "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have this fullness in Christ."

Ephesians 4:24 - "And to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

Colossians 3:10 - "And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator."

Romans 13:1 - "Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of your sinful nature."

Colossians 3:1-4 - "Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above...Set your minds on things above...For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears then you also will appear with Him in glory."

Philippians 2:12 - "For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose."

Galatians 2:20 - "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

II Corinthians 13:5 - "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you..."

Ephesians 3:19 - "That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."

Perhaps the real question is: Do I live for Christ or do I allow Christ to live in and through me? (Philippians 2:12)

II Corinthians 4:10-11 - "We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake. so that His life may be revealed in our mortal body."

Romans 8:29 - "For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son..."

Children have the same life as their Father.

II Peter 1:4 - "You may participate in the divine nature..."

I John 4:4 - "Because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."

I John 4:13 - "We know that we live in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit."

I John 4:16-17 - "God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. Love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like Him."

I John 5:11-12 - "God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life."

To be like Christ means that we live by the power of the Spirit and the Spirit produces in us and through us the fruit of the Spirit and the lifestyle pictured Biblically for elders and deacons.

=The "fruit of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22) pictures the nature of Christ, which the Holy Spirit is producing in us.

=The qualities of an elder and deacon (I Timothy 3:1-3; Titus 1:6-9) picture the life style that Christians live by the power of the Holy spirit. This lifestyle is the out working of the life of Christ in the believer.

Jesus pictured the character and nature of God when He came to this earth in the flesh. He put flesh and blood reality to God's nature. He showed us by His life what God was like. (Colossians 1:15 - "He is the image of the invisible God..." John 14:19 - "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.")

Could it be that we are to do the same as the "body of Christ"?

Willing to Die for a Lie?

As a pastor and counselor, I have always been interested in why people react and behave the way they do. What really causes individuals to do what they do? Most behavior is fairly easy to explain, but there are certain behaviors that seem impossible to understand and certainly to explain. For example, would you be willing to allow yourself to be tortured, and even killed, for a story you knew to be a lie?

People have been known to deny the truth in the face of torture, pain, and the threat of death. But to face torture and death for a story that you know to be a lie? History is filled with hundreds of accounts of deathbed confessions...people who wanted to clear the record before they met their Maker. And it is an accepted fact that "a dying person never lies."

So what kind of person would allow himself to be tortured for something he knew to be a lie? Men do not willingly face torture and death for a story or cause they know to be fictitious. Men do not willingly die for something they know to be a lie!

May I tell you a story about a man and the agonizing torture to which he was submitted? In the country where this man lived, the rulers were particularly cruel. (They would make Adolf Hitler appear to be a nice guy!) The rulers arrested this man and tortured him because of a story he was telling to anyone and everyone who would listen. They devised the most horrible, painful torture they could think of because they were determined to get this man to admit that the story he was telling was a lie.

They tied ropes around each of his wrists and hoisted him in the air. Then they swung him around until he hung over a pot of boiling oil. With him hanging only inches above the pot of oil they again ordered him to admit that the story he was telling was a lie. He would not. He could not!

They dipped his body into the vat of boiling oil. Can you imagine the agony, the horrible pain? Would anyone allow this to happen to himself for a lie? Men do not willingly suffer this kind of torture for a cause they know to be a lie.

There was another man, in another country who was also arrested and tortured because he would not admit the same story was a lie. The authorities literally skinned him alive to try and make him confess that what he was saying was a lie.

The first man was the Apolstle John and the second was the Apostle Bartholomew. Christian history records that John survived his torture and died an old man. Bartholomew, after being skinned alive, was crucified. Neither man ever admitted that what they were saying was a lie.

I could tell you many more tales from early Church History of men who died because they would not admit that the story they were telling was a lie. In fact, all of the disciples of Christ, were tortured and died for the same storoy:

Peter - Crucified head down.
Andrew - Crucified on a cross-shopped like an "X"; he preached to his torturers until he died.
James - Beheaded.
Philip - After scourging, he was hanged against a pillar.
Thomas - Thrust through with a spear.
Matthew - Died by a sword.
James the Less - Beaten and stoned; his brains were beaten out with a club.
Thaddeus - Crucified.
Simon - Crucified.
Jude - Shot to death with arrows.
Matthias - Stoned and beheaded.
Barnabas - Stoned to death.

And then take the case of PAUL. You can read in II Corinthiasn 11:24 about the torture he endured:
...He was lashed five times, receiving 39 lashes each time.
...He was beaten with rods three times.
...He was stoned, and left for dead.
And, finally, he was beheaded by the infamous Nero of Rome.

What was the story, the message that these men would not admit to as a lie? It was the empty tomb story about Jesus the Christ. Even in face of the threat of horrible torture, and even on their deathbeds, each of these men never once denied the resurrection of Jesus Christ. "He is Alive!: is the message of Easter that they died for. More people have died in history for that message than any other!

One other interesting fact to consider about the story these men told: The message of the resurrection was first preached by these same men in the city where the crucifixion took place within a twenty minute walk of the empty tomb!

As a pastor and counselor, I have always been interested in why people behave the way they do. The deaths of the Disciples intrigue me, not just because they died painful, horrible martyr's deaths, but because something happened in their lives that turned fishermen, tax collectors, ordinary guys into men who were willing to die for their beliefs. They never denied the truth of their story. The only explanation is the resurrection of Jesus Christ!

Spiritual Burn-Out and Future Grace

We begin our service for the Lord with great energy and enthusiasm. We are so grateful for all that He has done in our life. How could we not serve Him with all of our energies. However, in time, we often become tired and disappointed. We lose our joy and become frustrated with our Christian experience. Usually a pessimistic attitude sets in and we begin to be legalistic with ourselves and with those we are ministering to. We become negative and discouraged. We lost our motivation and just feel worn out. We have trouble studying the Scriptures or being with other Christians. Typically we get "weary" of Christian people.

Service and ministry based on gratitude for what God has done for me in the past has lost its ability to motivate me when I get tired and worn out. Then I develop what John Piper calls the "debtors ethic." I feel like I owe service to God like I owe my house payment. I am not moved by grace anymore, but by legalistic fear that I have to pay God back.

So I push myself. I redouble my efforts. I try harder all the time, feeling guiltier and guiltier because I have lost my early passion.

This is a mistake many Christians make. The key for breaking this cycle is to transform our gratitude into hope. Since God has been faithful with His grace in the past, I can trust that He will give me the grace in the future that will empower me to serve Him. I am grateful for what He has done, but there is nothing to repay. All God wants from me is to have faith that He will be as full of grace for me in the future as He has been in the past.

When I exercise my faith in His future grace, like I have His past grace, then the Holy Spirit is liberated in me to empower the gifts I have been given and accomplishes the work God desires to accomplish through me. My faith in past grace (i.e. the Cross and redemption) is wonderful and effective for my salvation. God's future grace, His power and wisdom and energy through the Holy Spirit, is just as wonderful and effective. My faith for service is not in past grace, but in future grace...the confident assurance that the grace that saved me will also empower me. God will be faithful to all of his promises for grace in the days to come.

Faith in past grace leads to salvation and gratitude. Faith in future grace leads to sanctification, hope and service. Our faith is primarily a future oriented "assurance of things hoped for" (Hebrews 11:1). The grace that saved me in the past is sufficient to sustain me in the future.

This concept of "Future Grace" is something many Christians in the Church have missed. Hope in future grace encouraged me, empowers me and gives me wisdom. It is trusting that the same loving Father who redeemed me through Jesus death will empower me through the Holy Spirit. Satan wants to distract us with the "debtor's ethic." "You ought to..." "You have to..." "How could you do that after all God has done for you?" These are expressions of Satan's lies. "You call yourself a Christian and have those thoughts?" On and on the lies persist. Many Christians recognize the lies, but don't understand the motivational differences between "gratitude for past grace" and "hope in future grace."

The solution for burnout is to focus on the promises of God's future grace. His grace never changes. It is the same today as it was yesterday and it will remain consistent in the future. Focus your hope on the future grace of God and trust Him to be faithful to all of His promises.

If you want to read more on this topic, John Piper wrote a book several years ago entitled FUTURE GRACE. It is an excellent, but big (almost 500 pages) and sometimes too deep for the average guy. But I know that you are above average!

Grace Defined

Grace is the nature and resources of God available to us 24/7.

Grace is the overflowing favor of God, the expression of His nature. God expresses His grace through love and mercy.

Grace is unconditional love expressed through unconditional acceptance made available to us through the unlimited resources of God because of Christ death on the Cross. Because of the Cross, the wrath of God toward sinners is removed. "Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." John 1:17

Grace is like oxygen we breathe. We cannot store up oxygen today for tomorrow. It must be appropriated moment by moment. God's grace is appropriated in a similar manner...daily! Remember the story of "manna." The grace you had yesterday will not do for today.

Prayer is the exercise of drawing on the grace of God.

"I have chosen you" (John 15:16) is the way the grace of God begins in our lives.

"Living under the law is the tendency to desire a list of preset boundaries and not a relationship (For example: a young male asking how far he and his date can go sexually.) While law and grace both have commandments, Grace comes with an inbuilt ability to obey what was commanded. Under grace, I don't get a road map...I get a tour guide, the Holy Spirit. He directs, reveals and empowers me to be and do what the Word says." Bill Johnson, When Heaven Invades Earth, page 93

PLUGGING INTO FUTURE GRACE

My faith in past grace (i.e. the Cross and redemption) is wonderful and effective for my initial salvation. God's future grace, His power and wisdom and energy through the Holy Spirit, is just as wonderful and effective. My faith for living the Christian life and for Christian service is not in past grace, but in future grace...the confident assurance that the grace that saved me will also empower me to live today and to serve Him in all of my tomorrows.

Future grace is faith in the character and nature of God, that He will fulfill all of His promises. I live today by future grace. I serve today by future grace. "For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ." (II Corinthians 1:20)

Grace is the nature and character of God and by faith I plug into an intimate relationship with Him. I receive His grace right now and I have confidence that His grace will be there in the future. "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." (II Corinthians 9:8)

Whatever ministry I have is His ministry and it is empowered by His grace.

"But by the grace of God I am what I am and His grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them-yet not I but the grace of God that was with me." (I Corinthians 15:10)

God's Presence - Our Christian Experience

God's presence always dwells in a "house" on earth.

After the exile of the first couple from the Garden of Eden, God did not have a dwelling place on earth. His transcendent presence (omnipresence) has always been here, but His immanent presence (personal) was absent from the earth, except for special visitations to the early patriarchs (Noah-Genesis 6:1-7:16; Abraham-Genesis 12:1-22:13).

The first mention of God's immanent presence having a house on the earth comes in the life of Jacob. This is the story of Jacob's dream of a ladder or stairway resting on earth with its top reaching to heaven. On this ladder or stairway the angels of God were ascending and descending (Genesis 28:10-13, 16-17, 19). This story sets the foundation for the subject of "the house of God" on earth throughout the Scriptures. Jacob's response was:

"Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it. How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."

Jacob called that place "Bethel" which means "the house of God."

The next occurrence that relates to a house for God is during the Exodus of the Israelites out of Egypt. God told Moses to make a house for him (Exodus 25:8):

"Then have them (Israelites) make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them. Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you."

And once the Tabernacle was completed, "The glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle" (Exodus 40:34-35). The Tabernacle became the place where God dwelled on earth.

The term "dwell" is an interesting term as it is used in the Scriptures. It literally means "to inhabit as one's abode, to settle down in a dwelling, to dwell fixedly in a place; to tabernacle with." God came to dwell among the Hebrew people and His abode was the Tabernacle.

In I Chronicles 17 we read of David's desire to build a house for God.

"After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent."

Nathan had a dream that David was not the one to build a house for God but that it would be Solomon, David's son who would build God's house (I Chronicles 17:1-14).

Solomon did build the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem (II Chronicles 3-5). When the Temple was finished, "the glory of the Lord filled the temple of God" (II Chronicles 5:13-14). Solomon said the Temple was a place for God to dwell forever (II Chronicles 6:1-2). But God had another dwelling place in mind that Solomon did not know about.

The Hebrew people turned from God and the Temple was eventually destroyed. The Israelites were taken into captivity and eventually scattered all over the earth. After the Temple was destroyed, God did not have a dwelling place, a house on earth, until Jesus was born. This was God's place that Solomon did not understand.

In John 1:14 it reads:

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us..."

Remember that the word "dwelt" means "to tabernacle with." Jesus was the tabernacle of God in the flesh, the place whwere God lived on the earth. Jesus said, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father" (John 14:9). Paul wrote, "For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him..." (Colossians 1:19). The author of Hebrews wrote, "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being..." And Jesus Himself connected His life to Jacob's dream (John 1:51) signaling that He Jesus was the house of God on earth.

Jesus was the dwelling place of God. The house of God made flesh; the abode where God lived. The house of God was no longer a tent or a building; the dwelling place of God was now a Person. Jesus brought the nature and character of God to earth in His flesh. He was an incarnation of God who dwelled inside of Him. He was a tabernacle, a temple of flesh. But God had a plan for something more!

Jesus told His Disciples that the Father would give them another "Helper" of the same kind as Himself to be with them forever (John 14:16). This promise was fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4, 17:21) and the Spirit of God came upon the Disciples and dwelled within them. God had a plan for a new dwelling place on earth!

Paul wrote to the Corinthians: "You yourselves are God's temple" (I Corinthians 3:16, 6:19) and in II Corinthians 6:16: "We are the temple of the living God." The consistent message of the New Testament is that christians are the house (temple, tabernacle, dwelling place) of God and that God's Spirit lives in us, making us His sons and daughters (Romans 8:14-16; Galatians 4:16). You are the "House of God' on earth today!

God's presence tabernacles (dwells) in us. His glory dwells in us as it did in the Tabernacle and Temple. Our hearts are the "holy of holies." His desire is for that glory to flow through us into the world. Wherever we go, we take the presence of God into that situation, that place of work, that relationship. And God wants us to let his glory, His love, His light infect every environment in which we live or work or pass through. We are "new creatures" (II Corinthians 5:17), "Christ's ambassadors" to spread the message of God's Kingdom (II Corinthians 5:20).

Wherever we go God's presence goes with us and we are to allow this "unseen" power and presence to change the atmosphere of every situation or encounter we experience. Jesus said we are the "salt" (Matthew 5:13) and the "light" (Matthew 5:14) and wherever we go, we add salt and shine His light. The atmosphere is impacted and changed.

You are the "House of God" on earth. Allow God to be at home inside of you, but unlock all the doors so He can freely pass in and out impacting every situation, every environment you encounter. You are an agent, an ambassador, presenting God through your life, telling the world Jesus is the real thing.

Growing Character

"Many of us prefer to stay at the threshold of the Christian life instead of going on to construct a soul in accordance with the new life God has put in." Oswald Chambers

"Constructing a soul" is a picture of Christian growth. Growth is a necessary part of the christian man's experience, an aspect of beling alive spiritually. All living things grow and renew themselves.

A Christian man's growth is in the area of his soul. It is in the soul where character becomes like that of Jesus, so you participate in His "Divine Nature" (II Peter 1:4).

Do you need to work on or construct your soul? The answer to that question depends on the condition of your soul. (Read: Mark 7:12, Hebrews 3:12, Matthew 12:34, 15:19, Jeremiah 17:9). What comes out of us verbally and behaviorally is evidence of the condition of our soul...the way we react before we consciously control our tongue or behavior or imagination. (Relate to lust or anger)

We are to construct our soul, participate in the growing of our character. We grow and change through 'intentional' choices. These intentional choices become intentional habits. There are at least five intentional choices to make:

1. Intentionally choose to get to know the God of Scripture.
2. Intentionally give priority to Bible study and the Spirit's interpretation of the Scriptures (John 16:13).
3. Intentionally pray everyday for "the eyes of your heart to be opened" (Ephesians 1:18)
4. Intentionally refuse to be content with head knowledge. Intentionally ask God to give you "Spiritual heartburn" (Luke 24:32)
5. Intentionally choose to be in relationships that encourage and edify you in your personal spiritual growth.

Soul Construction

Have you heard the definition of HELL, that is making the rounds in Christian circles? HELL is the person you are encountering the person you could have been? The definition hooks into our emotions more than it expresses our theology, but it is a sobering thought.

The part of us that lives for eternity is the immaterial part of ourselves, our soul. The person you are is the person you are on the inside and that is your soul. How are you doing in constructing your soul? How would you feel if the soul you have today, were to be compared to the soul you could have constructed? SOUL CONSTRUCTION presents the concept that what you make of your soul has eternal implications and is important to God.

The soul is that immaterial part of each human being that lives for eternity either with God or separate from God. Every human being who has ever lived had a soul; every human being who is alive today has a soul and every individual who will live in the years to come will have a soul. The human soul is what came into being when God breathed into Adam (Genesis 2:7) and it is that part of you that will live for eternity.

The human soul consists of all the invisible aspects of who you are. It includes your mind (thinking abilities), your emotions and feelings, your memory, your imagination, and your will. Most people are picturing the soul when they use the word "heart" to identify the material part of a person. ("He is all heart"; "She sure has a good heart." etc.) The soul is that unique part of each individual, created in the image of God. No two souls are alike, but each is a divine unique original. There will never be another soul just like your soul.

Each individual soul is created to represent a unique aspect of God's nature, His character and attributes. When the Spirit in a person shines through his or her soul, it shines with a unique flavor...expresses a uniqueness that God intended for that soul to present to the world. Every human being is developing, constructing, growing his own personal unique soul, and God is using all of the events and influences of life in the construction process (Romans 8:28-29).

TREASURES IN HEAVEN

What does a person take into eternity when he or she dies? Obviously the body does not go. None of his or her material possessions make the trip. So what lives in eternity when a person dies? Only the soul, the immaterial part of the person, lives for eternity.

Read this passage from the Gospel of Matthew in light of the idea that your soul lives for eternity:

"Do not store up for your self treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21

Perhaps the treasure a person is storing up is his or her soul which is where the heart is.

Paul wrote in I Timothy 4:8 that what we do now has implications for the future. "For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."

Jesus said, "The Kingdom of God is within you." Perhaps we need to reread some of the Gospels looking at the inner man instead of the outer world. For example, how does the meaning of the Parable of the Talents change if you see the talents as the individual's soul and the capacity of that soul? Were the servants complemented about what they did in the development of their own souls?

The War for Men's Hearts

"The story of your life is the story of the long and brutal assault on your heart by the one who knows what you could be and fears it." Waking The Dead, p. 34

There is a war going on. We are trapped in this war whether we like it or not. It is a war for the hearts of men. The enemy knows that to win, he must cripple men in their hearts. He knows he must take the heart out of the warriors in this battle between Kingdoms. The enemy, like a skilled boxer, body punches a man, to take the fight out of him, to break his will to win, to cause his opponent to lose heart and hope...and quit the battle.

How many times does a man have to be body punched, sucker punched, hit below the belt before he quits? How much can the average guy take? Paul Newman in the movie Cool Hand Luke, keeps getting up when the George Kennedy character keeps knocking him down. Luke keeps escaping and the Warden keeps trying to break his spirit, trying to take the fight out of him. But Luke keeps getting up and keeps fighting. He never quits. Isn't this a picture of the way life is supposed to be for Christian men...getting up time and time again? (See Romans 5:3, II Corinthians 1:3-10, James 1:2-4, I Peter 5:8-9.) And never, never, never...quitting!

This is a picture of the war Christian men are trapped in, but many have been crippled in their hearts and have quit the fight. Look at the Christian men all around you. Most are like dead men walking, going through the routine of life, just getting through the day, putting in their time. Too many Christian men have had the fight whipped out of them.

How much fight, will to win, is left in you? Most days many guys put in their hours, go home, kill the pain with a few beers or a few hours of TV, trying to forget the day they had and wishing they did not have to do it all over again tomorrow. Some of you know that feeling and don't know how much longer you can keep getting up and not quit.

Who stands with these men to encourage them? Who stands with you to encourage you?

"Encourage" is an interesting word. It literally means: "to put heart into." When we receive encouragement, we are getting more heart, a refreshing new life for our inner man. Our heart is being "kick-started," jolted out of lethargic hopelessness into a revitalized new perspective by the encouragement of a friend. This is what the Scriptures tell us to do: "Encourage one another" (I Thessalonians 4:18, Hebrews 3:13, 10:25, Isaiah 1:17).

The essential element in spiritual warfare is the battle for men's hearts. Who will they serve? Will they lose their will to fight and quit? Is there anyone who can step up and encourage them from their corner of the world?

THE HEARTS OF MEN

The major battlefield in spiritual warfare is the hearts of men. The enemy is entrenched and well fortified. The enemy forces are relentless. Their hope is to break men's hearts so they will quit the battle. The enemy appears to be achieving a great victory. Men's hearts are faltering on every front.

John Eldredge writes about the enemy's strategies:

"Make them so busy, they ignore the heart. Wound them so deeply they don't want a heart. Twist their theology, so they despise the heart. Take away their courage. Destroy their creativity. Make intimacy with God impossible for them." Waking the Dead, p. 51

The enemy knows that he wins a battle every time a man quits living from his heart.

The battle is on. You are in the war. Remember the speech from Brave Heart? What will be your memories of this day?

Guard your heart for it is the source of your life (Proverbs 4:23). Join the battle for the heart of your buddies and the men God brings into your life. Learn to encourage one another, holding on to your hope in the One who is faithful (Hebrews 10:23-25).

Men need other men who will mentor and coach them in this day of spiritual warfare. You can be one of those coaches or mentors that other guys look to. You can learn how to be there for other men. You can train yourself to see and understand the issues Satan uses to crush men's hearts and you can learn how to lead men to the sure hope that is in Christ, regardless of the issues they face. Your brothers in Christ need you to stand with them, walk with them and they need you to help guard their back-sides. Jesus has called you for this battle, this purpose, and He will enable you to become equipped and emposered to mentor and coach other men.

Men and True Power

It is imperative that Christian men understand the authority that Jesus has given to them. Here is a helpful outline:

1. Adam and Eve were put on earth and commissioned to "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it." (Genesis 1:28) They were given dominion over the entire earth and their job description was to use this dominion to "subdue" the earth.

2. Satan is always empowered through man's agreement with him (Amos 3:3) and he seduced Adam and Eve into agreement with his suggestion to eat the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:1-4).

3. In their agreement with Satan, they forfeited their dominion over the earth to Satan giving him the power and authority that God had originally given them (Luke 4:6). They were driven from the Garden.

4. God sent Jesus into the world to recapture "that" which was lost (Luke 19:10).

5. Satan tempted Jesus to take a short cut to get the power and dominion over the earth back (Luke 4:5-8). Jesus didn't take the bait.

6. Jesus told His followers that He gave them authority to overcome all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19). At the Cross, He defeated Satan and forever recaptured what Adam and Eve had lost (Colossians 2:13-15).

7. In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus says He got all of the dominion and power back from Satan, and we are to go in His Name and His authority to "subdue" the earth and fulfill the original Genesis commission.

8. Jesus said that the Father would send the Holy Spirit in His name (John 14:25). To be born spiritually is to become children of God and it means that you have the Holy Spirit living in you (Romans 8:15-16).

9. Jesus said that His followers would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes (Acts 1:8) and Paul said we are to be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). Our faith is based, not on men's wisdom but on God's power (I Corinthians 2:4-5). This is our true power and our primary job description (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Christian men are empowered to subdue the enemy (Ephesians 6:12) and retake the earth. In this way we bring God's Kingdom to earth and change the atmosphere of our community. This is the purpose of being empowered by Jesus!

Catalysts for Conversations

Conversations work best in peer relationships. These articles come from a peer to peers, not from a professional authority speaking ex cathedra. My desire is that you read, you thihk, you share, you converse and allow the Spirit of God to guide you into all truth (John 16:13). Let the Spirit of God take you to the insights and truths that will facilitate your personal growth and soul construction.

These articles are the product of my personal study which has been influenced significantly be the writings of Leanne Payne, Henri Nouwen, Bill Johnson, Oswald Chambers, Erwin McMannus and many others. I have endeavored to document the articles where I can, but many of my thoughts are a rewording of the ideas of another writer so that it communicates with me. There is no intent to not give credit where credit is due. But once the Holy Spirit has communicated the idea into my heart and soul, it becomes difficult to know anything more than perhaps the origins of the seed thought. Howard Hendricks, told us as a young seminary students: "Graze everyman's pasture, but give your own milk." I pray that what you read is like fresh milk to your soul.

Oswald Chambers wrote in My Utmost For His Highest:

"Struggle to reexpress some truth of God to yourself, and God will use that expression to someone else...You must struggle to get expression experimentally, then there will come a time when that expression will become the very wine of strengthening to someone else...Try to state to yourself what you feel implicitly to be God's truth, and you give God a chance to pass it on to someone else through you...The author who benefits you most is not the one who tells you something you did not know before, but the one who gives expression to the truth that has been dumbly struggling in you for utterance."

The Holy Spirit and Chambers words have guided me in what you will read in this Blog.

My prayer is that these articles will stimulate the thinking of people who truly hunger for authentic Christian spirituality. Perhaps the Spirit might use one or more of the thoughts presented here as a catalyst for one or more readers. Then these readers might come forward to lead a mighty new reformation of a lot of other people who will make a mighty difference in the years to come.
